After ten years have passed, J. D. Redding decides to spend the summer at the O'Grady farmhouse with his daughter Tory, who is now a teenager. The farmhouse is now being repainted with the aid of contract workers Nathan Murphy, his 10-year-old brother Alex, and their friend Ozzie Jones, who is considered to be somewhat dimwitted. While Ozzie is scouring the basement, he overhears the leprechaun calling for help and mistakes him for a little child. He frees the leprechaun from the carton by removing the worn out four-leaf clover that was inside of it. Ozzie learns from the leprechaun that he is really an Irish shoemaker who emigrated to the United States in the hope of making his fortune. Ozzie notices a rainbow after his attempts to convince the others that he had seen a leprechaun were unsuccessful. He decides to follow the rainbow in the hopes of finding upon a treasure chest along the way. Alex follows him because he is worried that Ozzie would hurt himself in some way. A bag holding one hundred gold coins mysteriously materializes in front of Ozzie. After Ozzie examines the gold and mistakenly consumes a coin while doing so, they conceal it in an old well in the belief that this would restore Ozzie's mental capacity.
The leprechaun on the farm deceives J. D. into falling into a trap by impersonating a cat and biting and injuring his hand while posing as a feline. After Tory and the others take him to the hospital, the leprechaun rides a tricycle. When Alex and Ozzie drive to a pawn shop to verify the gold's purity, the leprechaun kills the proprietor, Joe, for stealing his gold and polishes Joe's shoes before fleeing. On his way back to the farmhouse, the leprechaun builds himself a go-kart and is caught for speeding by a police officer. The leprechaun chases the police officer into the forest, where he finally murders the officer. The leprechaun returns to the farm and searches for his riches while sparkling each shoe he encounters. The group returns to the farmhouse after delivering J. D. to the hospital. Nathan is injured by a bear trap placed by a leprechaun as he checks the exterior of a plundered structure. The gang tackles the leprechaun with rocks and clubs in the open air.
When they uncover a pistol in the house, they shoot the leprechaun many times. They attempt to leave the property when it doesn't work, but the leprechaun has wrecked the truck's engine. After destroying the truck with the go-kart, the leprechaun terrorizes the group until Ozzie reveals that he and Alex uncovered the pot of money. Tory retrieves the sack from the well and presents it to the leprechaun. They proceed to the hospital, certain that the worst is behind them. As he tallies his treasure, the leprechaun notices that he is missing the final coin that Ozzie ate. He confronts them, certain that they have fooled him, until Ozzie tells them that O'Grady has suffered a stroke and has been admitted to a nursing home. The group diverts the leprechaun's attention by flinging dirty shoes at him, and the leprechaun is forced to shine the shoes while Tory gets into her vehicle and speeds away. Tory travels to the home to learn how to kill the leprechaun.
At the nursing home, the leprechaun pretends as O'Grady. The leprechaun chases Tory to an elevator and throws O'Grady's bleeding body down the elevator shaft as Tory flees. Before passing away, O'Grady advises her that the only way to kill the leprechaun is with a four-leaf clover, which happens to grow in a vast area outside the property. Tory returns to the home in search of a clover, but the leprechaun attacks and Nathan and Ozzie defend her. The leprechaun is gravely injured while trying to get the last gold coin, which Ozzie admits to having eaten. Alex ties a four-leaf clover found by Tory to a wad of gum and shoots it into the leprechaun's mouth, forcing him to melt away before he can kill Ozzie. Despite plunging into the well, the skeleton of the leprechaun emerges and says, "I want my gold." Nathan uses gasoline to fire both artifacts after forcing the leprechaun back into the well. Tory is reconciled with her father, marries Nathan, and they have a child when the cops arrive. Initially, the leprechaun was intended to return to Ireland. However, there was a problem: the Irish actor portraying the leprechaun, Warwick Davis, lacked a work visa.
